Because health care reform is inherently fiscally conservative.

Your Comments - An Online Petition
Our friend Libby sent this in, it's an online petition to 1) rename the health care reform bill that passed Kennedy's health committee as "The Kennedy Bill" and 2) pass the newly renamed bill (which includes the public option) through the Senate.
This is EXACTLY what I woke up thinking about! We need to all sign such a petition and send it into the Majority Whip's Office in the Senate AND to Boxer and Feinstien.
The country will respond positively to "The Kennedy Bill" that provides universal health care coverage to all, establishing the "right to a basic level of health care" for all americans. Second, there needs to be a strong public insurance option that competes DIRECTLY with private insurance (i.e. it canNOT be limited to those who do not have access to private insurance).
This is the right legacy to establish for this generation of Kennedys. This is not about whether Obama succeeds or fails. The Kennedy family sacrificed so much for this nation's ideals. I feel that our movement has now found our glue.
For goodness sake, did you hear Nancy Regan on MSNBC? SHE is hoping that Kennedy's Health Reform Bill is passed!!!....WE CAN DO THIS!!!!
One of the many physician Feinstein 1200'ers just added via email that although he affirms the idea behind this petition, he "also inquired as to whether that bill limits the public option to only uninsured individuals. If it does, it cannot compete with private insurance plans -- i.e., the 65% or so of the US population who are currently insured by private health insurance companies will be ineligible to choose the public option insurance over their current insurance. That is not a "robust public option," and not a "level playing field".
The Feinstein 1200 comprises the 1,200+ scientists, nurses, physicians, small business owners, artists and engineers who "occupied" Dianne Feinstein's office lobby during the week of August 10, 2009, at the behest of Organizing for America (OFA.)
Since OFA did not send an organizer to perform a headcount, one of us compiled a list of the attendees. We subsequently named ourselves in honor of the Senator whom we had been trying to convince of the importance of the public option and/or single payer.
We have since held a seminar featuring UCSF physicians and UCB economists on the potential savings of the public option. Most of our activity is recorded through a private email newsletter. Less frequently, we place information on this blog.
